It is always difficult to figure out the best way to get a pic of a child's fish that shows off the moment at its best. I have found that if the fish is small enough it is a good option to have the child hold the line. This has a few added benefits: one there is less chance of a spine doing any damage, and two if your child does not want to hold the slimy fish there is no contact.

Even sunfish have spines that can make them difficult to handle |
If your child is not so concerned with slime and the fish is of a non spiny or toothy variety (such as a carp) then the fish can be set in the child's lap. Make sure the fish is thoroughly tired and not so large that anyone will get hurt!

The lap hold is best for fish that are getting close to as large as the child |
You have noticed the animated pictures here. These are simply composites of a number of still frames. It really helps to have a camera that will shoot quickly so that you have more chances to get the perfect shot. It can be really hard to get all the participants to stay still at the same time! Simply pick out the one that looks the best.

The mat "hold" |
If all else fails or the fish are too big or too numerous than lay them on the mat and set the child behind them. This is also good if you want to avoid slime...provided the child can keep from touching them!
