(Carp) Fishing with Kids (part 2 - items)

So, how about carp fishing then? Well basically the normal idea of carp fishing is about as foreign to the idea of taking kids fishing as you can get. One involves doing nothing for long periods of time and the other requires at least some interesting things going at least some of the time. Now the key is to define "interesting". For very small kids (pre-walking) keeping things interesting is different from those that can walk and so on. Each stage in a child's development is different and requires different approaches. Regardless we are still talking short sessions, normally a few hours.

A hat is a good idea for both sun and rain.

At this point you may be wondering "did this fool really take his baby carp fishing?" and I will answer that in two parts: 1) yes I did, and 2) no I am not (not all the time anyway). I will go through the steps that I have taken to get out on the bank when the missus need some well earned rest or it was time for "fishing lessons".
First off a check list. There are a few more things you may need on the bank that are new. Some people like to bring loads of kit to the bank with them but this was not my style as I liked a mobile approach to my angling. I found that with some by simply loosening the straps on my pack I was able to fit them in.

A back pack such as this one form Trakker can help to keep your hands free.

Basic items:
  1. Diapers and wipes (there is nothing that will shorten a fishing trip like a blow out and no way deal with it)
  2. Plastic bags or wet bag for said diapers
  3. Drinks
  4. Snacks (yogurt drops are good)
  5. Sunscreen/bug repellent (kid safe - you may not need these all the time)
  6. Dry cloths
  7. Towel
  8. Hat
Once you have amassed these items you have to remember to bring them so keep a set with you rods or with your bait where or in the car - make them hard to forget. These items will take care of a child that is still small enough to be contained most of the time. For larger less containable kids the following are good depending on your location.

Netting - both fish and other creatures - can be lots of fun.

Advanced items (in addition to fishing stuff):
  1. Small net for catching things
  2. Shovel
  3. Bucket (for putting things in)
  4. Books
  5. Life-vest (PFD)
  6. Their own bait to throw in if you do not want them tossing yours in
Its simple enough to acquire these things and they can help to extend your fishing time for a lot longer.
